Conor McCormack believes John Caulfield should have a lead role in taking the League of Ireland to a higher level.
Caulfield parted company with Cork City last week after five years in which he won a double and secured European football each season.
He has kept a low profile since his Turner’s Cross exit and what he does next remains unclear - but it is believed he wants to stay in the game.
But if Caulfield does not return to management immediately, his ex-midfielder McCormack believes he should have a role steering League of Ireland football.
McCormack told Mirror Sport: “He’s an incredible man and I hope he stays in the game, even an FAI job where he could push the League of Ireland forward.
“He’s as passionate a man about this game as I’ve ever met. He has so much drive and would work his socks off for the league and every club in it.”

McCormack continued: “The game here deserves more - a lot more. I've been in the league eight years and I haven't really seen an improvement.
“It's disappointing because every other league in Europe is advancing and we're not. It needs a voice like John’s up there (FAI).
“He would demand standards and if he doesn't go back into management straight away, I think that would be a perfect job for him.”
