John Carver reveals plan for Aleksandar Mitrovic before Steve McClaren's frosty relationship with him

John Carver knows all about Aleksandar Mitrovic - the striker he agreed to sign but never got to use as Newcastle United boss.

Mitrovic, the former fan favourite who was never really used properly during his time at St James' Park will return to St James' Park with Fulham this weekend.

And while Carver, now working as Scotland coach, saw Steve McClaren take over has manager at United before Mitrovic's arrival, he is fully aware of what the Serbian brings, after studying his form as Newcastle lined up the deal.

"As it happens, there are few people who know him better than me," said Carver. "I remember the transfer was in place (before Steve McClaren was appointed).

"I watched video after video of him playing for Anderlecht.

"I was thinking: 'This guy can score goals IF the service is right'."

Now Carver believes that stopping the supply line to Mitrovic is key for any side looking to curb his influence on a game - and revealed how Scotland planned to do just that in last month's Euro play-off tie.

Carver said: "I know he can be a bit aggressive and wound up.

"I know a great deal about him.

"We restricted Mu'nas Dabbur and Eran Zahavi who are two good players and they didn't get a shot on target.

"Mitro is a different type of player in that he is a box player."
