John Boyega hits back at Star Wars fans who branded him a misogynist over 'sexist' joke

*Spoiler alert for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker*

John Boyega has hit back at Star Wars fans who branded him a misogynist over a "sexist" joke about Daisy Ridley 's character Rey.

The British actor, 27, plays rebellious stormtrooper Finn in the sci-fi franchise, and he's been bombarded with abuse over a saucy comment he made on Instagram .

An Instagram caption relating to Finn written by a fan of the films joked: "My boy after realizing Kylo died so he can date Rey."

Boyega himself then replied, writing: "It's not about who she kisses but who eventually lays the pipe. You are a genius."

It's a reference to the doomed romance between Rey and Kylo Ren ( Adam Driver ), who dies at the end of Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker and her other potential love interest Finn.

It seems Boyega was very keen to make light of his character not getting a happy ending with Rey, but some Twitter users branded the star "a misogynist" over the laying pipe joke.

Boyega hit back by calling the Twitter user "an idiot."

Another fan told him: "Bro you’re extremely disgusting and gross also f**king disrespectful," and the actor replied: "You obviously don’t know the difference between a fictional world and reality."

He added of his Star Wars co-star: "Daisy knows she isn’t the character. Lol so tbh she doesn’t give AF.”

The actor also replied to another critic explaining his position.

Boyega wrote: "I was talking about Rey from Star Wars. When did I speak about women in general? Where did I even mention holes? ... Bye now."

Doubling down on his joke on Instagram, the actor replied again to his original comment, saying "LAY THE PIPE. I said what I said. BYE."

There are currently no known plans for Boyega to reprise the role of Finn in the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker is out now in cinemas.
