John Bowie charged with murder of wife Roxlyn Bowie after her disappearance 37 years ago

John Bowie has been charged with the murder of his wife Roxlyn, after an investigation into her disappearance almost 40 years ago.

Ms Bowie was 31 years old when she disappeared from the home she shared with her husband and two young children on Saturday June 5, 1982. Her body has never been found.

Mr Bowie, now 69, was arrested at Woodford Correctional Centre on Queensland's Sunshine Coast on Friday following an investigation into Ms Bowie's disappearance by the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad.

He appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on a NSW arrest warrant, where his interstate extradition was granted.

He was extradited to Sydney on Saturday morning and will face Parramatta Local Court on Sunday after being refused bail.

Ms Bowie's daughter, Brenda Boyd, said her father's arrest had provided "a very bittersweet moment for our family".

"I'm so thankful that police never forgot about mum and never gave up trying to find out why she was so cruelly taken away from us," she said.
