Doctors at Spire Bristol Hospital have since inserted a number of needles in the Doctor Who and Torchwood star's neck.

Today Mr Barrowman has revealed the severity of the injury, updating his fans with a series of videos on his Instagram page.

"Hello everybody, it's about two in the morning and I've just had to wake up and take another pain killer and inflammatory," John told his Instagram followers in the first video.

The star then told fans he'd shortly be heading to hospital to have the procedure on his vertabrae, reports The Mirror.

"Scott (Mr Barrowman's husband) says I'm going to have some small needles... and some very big ones put into my neck so I'll let you know how it goes.

"I can't really move that much ...so that's it," added John.

He told fans in the caption to his post that after an MRI scan doctors found he was suffering from a C5/6 facet joint injury.

"Hopefully a series of intraspinal injections will reduce inflammation and get me back up & running again in time for Monday’s show in Manchester," John told worried fans.

In the statement which revealed the Hippodrome cancellation, the reality star shared his devastation at having to call the show off.

He wrote: "I'm devastated to have to tell you that due to severe neck injury, which has made it impossible for me to sing and move, I've been rushed to hospital for a diagnosis.

"The Doctors have advised me to not perform this weekend while I try and recover, so I've had to make the very difficult decision to cancel my performances at the Bristol Hippodrome on Saturday 30th November and at the SEC Armadillo, Glasgow, on Sunday 1st December.

"I am so disappointed and upset as I was looking forward to seeing you all, I feel I am letting everyone down, but it's simply not possible for me to do the show in my current condition."
