John Barrowman to replace Jason Gardiner on new Dancing on Ice after competing in 2006

John Barrowman will take over from Jason Gardiner on Dancing on Ice.

TV bosses were said to be delighted to offer the actor, 52, the role after Jason, 47, has upset contestants with his biting comments.

Former Dancing on Ice contestant John, who took part on the show in 2006, has returned to the ice rink to judge the competition.

A source told The Sun: “Producers are delighted to have got John.

“He’s a good fit for the show as he knows how it works and has done judging roles before.

“They also feel he’s a bit more wholesome than Jason, who put a lot of noses out of joint with some of his comments. They think John will be a big success.”

Jason waged war against outspoken Gemma Collins when she competed on the show last year.

The dancer was part of the original line-up of judges from 2006 until it finished in 2011.

Jason returned to the show in 2013 and again in 2018, both times when it was rebooted.

Whispers had tipped Strictly professional James Jordan for the role but it seems John beat him to the position.

It's been more than a decade since John put his skates on to train for Dancing on Ice with professional dancer Olga Sharutenko.

The actor recently charmed the TV audiences with his appearance on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here when he entered the snake-infested jungle.

TV sensation John is best known in the showbiz world for his acting role on Doctor Who and its spin-off show Torchwood.

In January this year, the I'm A Celeb star gushed he would love to return to Dancing on Ice during a This Morning appearance.

The dishy heartthrob admitted he still had the same skates in the back of his closet.

He said: "I'm always up for doing programmes and that's what I loved about the jungle. They were good challenges it's not a back-stabbing event and Dancing on Ice is where you learn a skill, you get challenged and you have to prove yourself and that's what I liked about it.

"And if I was ever asked about it, I might do it again. I've still got the skates! I've still got the same skates they're in my closet. I'm not in it anymore but the skates are!"
