John Barnes sends Jose Mourinho message to Daniel Levy as Tottenham prepare to resume season

John Barnes believes Jose Mourinho is the right man to take Tottenham Hotspur forward.

But the Liverpool legend has warned that the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss needs to have players who are going to buy into his style of play.

Mourinho has had a mixed spell as Tottenham head coach so far, since succeeding Mauricio Pochettino in north London last year.

Initially, he enjoyed a good run of results, with Spurs hauling themselves back into contention for a top four spot in the Premier League, having been 12 points behind Chelsea at one stage.

But Spurs have struggled in the past couple of months, with the Lilywhites bowing out of the FA Cup and Champions League, and falling seven points behind Chelsea in the race for a top four spot.

Mourinho has been hampered by injuries to key players, with Spurs playing without a recognised striker in recent weeks in the absence of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, while January signing Steven Bergwijn also recently joined the injured list and missed the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie with RB Leipzig.

And Barnes believes Mourinho needs support to do well at Spurs, with the Liverpool legend heaping praise on the Portuguese manager.

“Jose Mourinho is the right man to take any club forward. He is a fantastic manager,” he said, speaking to BonusCodeBets.co.uk.

“It is whether the players are going to buy into his style of play, which they didn’t adjust at Chelsea and Manchester United, and it doesn’t seem to be working at this current moment in time.

“Unfortunately, in this day and age, if the players decide that they're not going to buy into what the manager wants to do, then you then become not the right man.

"So, who is going to be the right man? The right man is someone who is given the trust and the belief and the support. But it's so hard in modern football because players now have much more power.

“To win trophies, Tottenham need to be competing competitively. Competing for the league, which they do, they’re in the top three every year, they got to the final of the Champions League which is huge for a club like Spurs.

“Mourinho has that competitive nature where he could win trophies. To be in with a chance of winning cups and trophies, you need to be able to compete at the highest level which he has done previously.”
