John Barnes claimed that Gini Wijnaldum will not be a big loss for Liverpool as he leaves the club this summer.
Wijnaldum agreed to sign for PSG on a free transfer earlier this month when his contract at Liverpool expires at the end of June.
The Dutchman enjoyed five successful seasons at Anfield playing a pivotal role in their Champions League, Premier League and Club World Cup wins but Liverpool legend Barnes said that the Reds will not miss the midfielder next season.
“Georginio Wijnaldum played well for the Netherlands in their opening match. He’s been a fantastic player for Liverpool, but he won’t be that big a miss for the club," he told BonusCodeBets.
“Gini doesn’t win you matches, generally. The front three do, and the back four do.
“They’ll miss him but they’d miss Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez or Alisson more. He’s not Kevin De Bruyne or David Silva, he can be replaced.
“Gini is a hard-working midfield player, of which Liverpool have several. He didn’t play every week, and Liverpool have got Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Thiago and Fabinho – it’s not a position they should be concerned about.”
The former England winger's comments come after Wijnaldum captained the Netherlands to a 3-2 win over Ukraine in the Euros on Sunday. The 30-year-old showed Liverpool what they would be missing when he opened the scoring with a strike after 52 minutes.
Borussia Monchengladbach's Florian Neuhaus is the favourite to replace Wijnaldum at Liverpool. The club are monitoring their midfield options.
