John Barnes fires ominous Alfredo Morelos Rangers warning as he wades into transfer dilemma

Former Celtic boss John Barnes believes Rangers are facing a huge "setback" if talisman Alfredo Morelos departs this summer.

Record Sport understand long-term admirers Lille are readying a £17m offer and West Brom boss Slaven Bilic is also monitoring the Colombian international.

Rangers face a monumental call as they contemplate what's next for the 24-year-old ahead of a season where they are aiming to stop Celtic from securing Ten In A Row.

Barnes doesn't envy the decision awaiting fellow Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard but is adamant the time is now to move on if that's what the player desires.

Morelos has made no secret of his wish to ply his trade in the English Premier League at some stage but has insisted on several occasions he remains happy at Ibrox.

And Barnes reckons Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson faces a real challenge in identifying a target who could replicate Morelos' 29 goals from last season.

The 56-year-old, speaking to BonusCodeBets, said: "Morelos leaving Rangers would be a huge setback for them because he scores a lot of goals – he’s got some disciplinary problems as well – but he’s the one scoring the goals.

"Whether they can replace him, we don’t know. Rangers can’t do anything about that, with other clubs being financially stronger they can’t offer him enough money to stay, so if he decides to go then he’ll go.

"What they really want is players who are committed to the cause, you don’t want players who aren’t going to be happy at the club? Although they say they’ll do anything to keep him, if he’s not happy and he stays then that’s no good to anyone."
