John Barnes believes Newcastle's new signings will see the club regain their identity

Newcastle's three new signings will 'bring a bit of identity back' to the Magpies.

That is according to former United midfielder John Barnes who believes Newcastle have completed 'three very good signings'.

Steve Bruce has been handed the final say on recruitment at St James' Park this summer and enjoyed a brilliant week in the transfer market.

Newcastle completed the £20million signing of England international forward Callum Wilson and followed it up with his former Bournemouth team-mate, Ryan Fraser, with the Scotland international winger joining on a free transfer.

The pair combined for 12 goals in the 2018/19 campaign, a total that's only been bettered once in Premier League history (13 by Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer in 1994/95).

Their arrival was backed up by the signing of highly rated left-back Jamal Lewis from Norwich City. The 22-year-old comes highly recommended and was the subject of a rejected bid from Premier League champions Liverpool earlier this summer.

And Barnes is excited to see the trio in action and he is expecting his former side to be 'more attacking and diverse' this term.

“Newcastle have made three very good signings," Barnes told Bonus Code Bets.

"Callum Wilson scores goals and is aggressive in his play, Ryan Fraser is quite a creative player which is good for Newcastle as the problem for them currently is that they haven’t been scoring enough goals. Jamal Lewis is a young, brave and attacking left-back, that will provide another option when going forward.

“Steve Bruce has been quite pragmatic in his approach by playing one striker and being quite direct, but these signings have made Newcastle more attacking and diverse when playing forward.

"We are not sure if he is going to play one striker or two, with Joelinton and Callum Wilson, but signing attacking players shows that they are looking to add more goals than they did last season.

“What is good is that all three players are British, whereas in the past, Newcastle have signed a lot of foreign players.

"Even though we know the Toon faithful would want 11 Geordies playing for the club, bringing in a few British players will definitely bring a bit of the identity back.”
