John Barnes admits he was happy Newcastle scored as opposed to Trent Alexander-Arnold being sent off

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was very lucky to have escaped a red card during their 3-2 win over Newcastle United.

With Newcastle 1-0 down, Alexander-Arnold blocked Salomon Rondon's goalbound effort on the line with his hand.

Christian Atsu followed up on the rebound to level the scores but while the Ghanaian raced off to celebrate, Rondon was seen remonstrating to referee Andre Marriner that the England international should have been sent off and United awarded a penalty instead.

Of course, there was no guarantee Newcastle would have scored the penalty but Liverpool would have had to play 70 minutes with 10 men.

It proved to be a pivotal moment in the game and in a cruel twist of fate, Alexander-Arnold then set up Liverpool's second goal for Mo Salah as the Reds went in at half-time 2-1 up.

Many Magpies fans took to social media to suggest they would have rather seen the right-back red carded as opposed to being awarded the goal.

Conversely, Liverpool fans were happy the goal was allowed to stand and the 20-year-old was able to play on.

That was certainly the view of Liverpool legend John Barnes. Although he played for Newcastle as well, the former England star has never hidden that he is a Reds fan.

And while working on BeIN Sports' coverage of the game, Barnes admitted he was happy the goal stood as opposed to Alexander-Arnold seeing red.

When asked whether he was happy Newcastle scored rather than Alexander-Arnold seeing red, Barnes replied: "Absolutely.

"Because, of course, they would have got a penalty, he would have been sent off and Liverpool would have been down to 10 men.

"He created the goal for Mo Salah. Could it be fate?"
