Johanna Konta battles back from brink to beat Karolina Pliskova and reach US Open quarter-finals

Johanna Konta is through to the US Open quarter-finals after a battling performance to see off Karolina Pliskova.

The British number one found herself in a seemingly unassailable position after losing the first set and going a break down in the second.

But the 28-year-old showed her battling side to win 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 after two hours and 20 minutes on court at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

It is the first time Konta has reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows after three fourth-round defeats.

In her on-court interview, Konta admitted she was delighted to have overcome such a tough opponent.

"With Karolina, there's going to be massive portions of the match where I didn't really know what I'm doing out there or don't feel very effective," she said.

"It was about trusting that the fundamental thing I was doing was the right thing.

"Overall, I'm really pleased to have played a great match here and to go one step further than the fourth round is a massive achievement for me."

Konta's impressive form continues having also made the semi-finals at Roland Garros and the last eight at Wimbledon in July.

She will play fifth seed Elina Svitolina or the American 10th seed Madison Keys for a place in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
