Jogger hit in head with piece of wood by two men in random attack

A runner has suffered head injuries after he was struck with a piece of wood in an "unprovoked and callous" attack by two men.

Officers said the jogger was on an early morning run, at about 7.25am, on New Brighton Promenade before the shameful assault.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was running near the Black Pearl before he was hit with a piece of wood by two men.

A man from Wallasey was arrested shortly after, on suspicion of Section 18 assault.

The force said the injured runner was taken to hospital after the attack, as emergency services were called to the scene.

Pictures from the promenade showed a large emergency service presence, as officers carried on their investigation into the afternoon.

CCTV and witness enquiries are also ongoing.

Detective Inspector Darren Taylor said: “This was an unprovoked and callous attack against a man who was taking a run along the promenade early this morning.

"It is believed that the suspect was with another male and ran up towards Tower Grounds after the attack.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish what has led up the incident and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around 7.15am who saw anything or has any information to get in touch.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information which could assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK quoting reference 20000691418.
