Jogger attacked by 'laughing thugs' suffers 'broken cheek' after kick to face

A man out jogging was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked by a gang of men.

The "appalling" unprovoked attack happened yesterday around 12.20pm as the man was running on Blundells Lane near the golf course in Rainhill.

Police said a man in his 50s was approached by three men on the pathway who knocked him to the ground.

He was then kicked to the face and ribs and is reported to have suffered a broken cheek bone just under his eye.

According to a post by a local running club on Facebook, the thugs are said to have been "laughing all the time" during their attack.

The gang are then said to have walked off towards the clubhouse.

Police said the victim, who is a running coach, was able to make his way home and was taken to hospital for facial, neck and rib injuries.

The man's attackers were said to have been wearing dark clothing. Two were described as in their late teens with dark hair and 'strong scouse accents'.

The third was described as mid-30s, bald with shaven head and wearing glasses, also with 'a strong scouse accent'.

Detectives are checking CCTV and warned anyone running in the area to be aware.

Detective Inspector Leanne Hobin said: "This was an appalling and completely unprovoked attack and we're determined to find all of those responsible and put them before the courts.

"The victim is in hospital and was extremely distressed to be set upon in this way. We will be supporting him as enquiries continue.

"If you were in the area of the golf club at this time and saw or heard anything, or captured these three males on CCTV or dashcam, please come forward and we will do the rest."
