Jofra Archer's mother hails world champion son after England heroics against New Zealand

Cricketing hero Jofra Archer was hailed a “superstar” by his proud mum after helping England win the world cup.

After the Mirror stepped in to ensure his family were together to watch the historic victory at Lords, they told the Mirror they could not be prouder of their son.

The England hero’s mum, Joelle Waithe, said: “No words can describe how I feel.

“The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, but we never gave up hope. I’ve seen Jofra play too many times to know he fights to the end.

“To see him given the final over was something I will never forget.

“Despite the pressure, I knew he would come through. He’s world champion now.”

Joelle was joined by her husband Patrick, who the Mirror flew at the 11th hour from his home in Barbados to London to ensure he would not miss the final.

He said: “It was one of the greatest days of my life.

“I cannot thank you guys enough for getting me here. I will be ever indebted to the Mirror.

“The pride at seeing Jofra and his teammates win the World cup is something that will live with me for the rest of my life.

“To see him bowl the last over to help lift the trophy is what he has dedicated his life too ever since he was a small boy.

“To me and his mum he is a superstar. We could not be prouder of what he achieved.”

Although the demon bowler only took one wicket in the final, his ten overs for 42 runs ensured New Zealand were kept to a reasonable total.

Such was the 24-year-old’s prowess with the ball, captain Eoin Morgan went with Jofra for the final super over choosing the Sussex cricketer over experienced Chris Woakes.

Despite being hit for a six in the second ball of the sudden death over, he maintained his composure to ensure the Kiwi failed to beat the 16 they needed to win.

Although born in Barbados, thanks to his British father, Frank Archer, Jofra was allowed to play for England.

However, it was due to his cricket nut step-father’s unwavering support, coaching and love that turned Jofra into a “superstar”.
