Jofra Archer gets his big chance to stake England Cricket World Cup claim

Jofra Archer is set to make his international debut next month in Ireland, but England opted against naming him in their preliminary 15-man World Cup squad on Wednesday morning.

Each nation must name a squad before April 23, which can be changed until a week before England open the competition against South Africa at the Kia Oval on May 30.

England have had a settled one-day international team since overhauling their approach to the format in the wake of a disastrous performance at the 2015 World Cup, with Archer’s possible selection the only bone of contention in Wednesday's squad announcement.

Barbados-born Archer, who qualified for England last month on residence but has a British father and passport, will have a possible seven limited-overs internationals against Ireland and Pakistan to force his way into the squad.

Fellow Barbados-born Sussex seamer Chris Jordan, who has not played an ODI since September 2016 but is a regular in the T20 squad, is also selected as part of a 17-man squad for the Pakistan ODI series.

England were always going to look at Archer, a 24-year-old fast-bowling all-rounder with a brilliant yorker and superb fielding, but have decided against rushing him straight into the World Cup squad.

He has played just 14 50-over matches and his selection comes largely on the back of brilliant performances in T20 leagues — on Tuesday he took three for 15 for Rajasthan Royals against Kings XI Punjab in the IPL.

National selector Ed Smith described him as “a very talented and exciting cricketer” and it seems highly likely he will end up in the squad for the World Cup, and possibly the home Ashes series that follows.

Looking over their shoulders during the early summer ODIs will be bowlers Tom Curran, Liam Plunkett and David Willey, while Archer could also come into the squad for Joe Denly, who provides batting cover with Alex Hales and part-time spin.

England begin their summer with an ODI against Ireland in Dublin two weeks on Friday and a T20 international against Pakistan in Cardiff two days later. Jos Buttler, who is expecting his first child imminently, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali will miss those trips having been at the IPL.

Chris Woakes, who has a knee injury, is also rested. Jordan is in the squad for the trips to Dublin and Cardiff. Also included are James Vince and Sam Billings — and outstanding performances could see them push Denly for his place in the World Cup squad.
