Jofra Archer confirms Ashes ambition after call-up for England ODI games

Jofra Archer has admitted to eyeing up an Ashes bow to go with a tilt at the World Cup in what could be a bumper summer for the pace ace.

As the anticipation around Archer’s England debut next month continues to build, the 24-year-old revealed he has designs on being involved in all three forms of international cricket despite largely making his name in the T20 arena.

It is Archer’s credentials in tournaments such as the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash in Australia that have made him a late addition to England’s World Cup plans. But his first-class record is not to be sniffed at either with Sussex benefitting from his pace in four-day cricket just as much as in the white-ball games.

And with the Ashes following on in August and September, Archer has revealed that his switch from Barbados to the UK was as much about Test cricket as it was one-day and T20 thrills.

“It’s the reason why I moved, why I’ve trained hard,” said Archer, who will link up with his new England team-mates for the first time in Cardiff this weekend. I want to play, I want to be there. I just don’t want to play for some time, I want to play for a long time. Not just T20 cricket or ODIs, but Test cricket too, definitely.”

Before Archer's selection to play in the pre-World Cup games against Ireland and Pakistan, fellow England bowler Chis Woakes suggested "it probably wouldn't be fair, morally" to parachute him into the squad so soon after he qualified on residency grounds.

“This is a great England team that has been playing very well for a number of years leading into the World Cup," said Archer. "I understand the situation and I’m very happy with everything. I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes."
