Joey Veerman transfer latest as Rangers 'hope to strike deal' for highly-rated Dutch star

Rangers are stepping up their bid to sign Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman, according to a report.

The midfielder has emerged as a target for the Ibrox club with Steven Gerrard looking to strengthen his team ahead of the start of their Premiership title defence and Champion League qualifiers.

Veerman is looking to leave Heerenveen and was frustrated when the Dutch club rejected a bid from Verona last week.

He reckons the Eredivise club should make his asking price a bit fairer and Rangers are now hoping they can get a deal done.

The Glasgow Times report that Rangers hope to fend off competition for the Dutchman by making him their most expensive signing of the summer.

The Ibrox side have already signed Nnamdi Ofoborh and John Lundstram for their midfield but doubts over the fitness of Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield, as well as the future of Glen Kamara means Rangers are continuing to look for more.

And Veerman could be that man if Rangers can get Heerenveen to agree to a deal, with a package worth around £7million set to be needed to get him.

Rangers take on Arsenal this weekend before games against Blackpool, Brighton and Real Madrid to finish off their pre-season campaign.

Veerman would become the club's fourth summer signing after Ofoborh, Lundstram and Fashion Sakala, who finally joined up with the squad on Thursday.
