Joey Veerman to Rangers transfer boost as Feyenoord ready to admit defeat in pursuit of midfield star

Rangers have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Joey Veerman as Feyenoord admit they may not be able to sign him due to financial constraints.

The midfielder is a top target for Steven Gerrard, and is keen to leave Heerenveen this summer.

A bid from Serie A side Verona has already been thrown out, but Rangers face serious competition from within the Eredivisie.

But while Feyenoord would love to get a deal done for Veerman, technical director Frank Arnesen admits they're unlikely to be able to afford him.

He told Voetbal International: "I think he's a great player and he's just the type that we're missing in the team.

"The coach (Arne Slot) is crazy about him too.

"I just think it will be a difficult deal because we are financially limited."

It's thought Heerenveen want around £8m for Veerman, having turned down just over half that from Verona.

They've also rebuffed Feyenoord's advances, despite the player stating he'd be keen on a move to De Kuip.

He said: "I think they have asked Heerenveen how much they want for me.

“Yes, I would be a very happy man if I can go there.

“It could be a good step for me. I certainly think so."
