Joey Veerman in firm Rangers transfer verdict as playmaker reveals 'difficult' Heerenveen position

Wantaway Joey Veerman has admitted defeat in his bid to leave Heerenveen this summer amid interest from Rangers.

The midfielder was reportedly a top target of Steven Gerrard this summer and told his current club that he wanted to leave for a new challenge.

The 22-year-old has already been subject of bids from Hellas Verona in Serie A and Eredivise rivals Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar this summer with Rangers waiting in the wings.

Heerenveen have stood firm amid the interest and demanding a fee in the region of €10million (£8.4million).

Veerman claims that AZ are the latest side to have lodged a bid at around €4million, but states the club have turned the offer down.

After playing for Heerenveen against Pascal Jansen's side, he told Leeuwarder Courant : "I am simply paid by Heerenveen. I am also a player of this club.

"It now takes another day and a half for the transfer window to open, so it will be quite difficult to leave.

"I already knew about AZ's offer two days earlier. It's just before the transfer period, but I can't change that.

When asked about Heerenveen's stance on the interest, he added: "I don't care about that either."

John Lundstram and Juninho Bacuna have been added to the Premiership champions midfield this summer but it remains to be seen if Gerrard will look to add more in the middle of the park.
