Joey Veerman blanks Rangers speculation as Heerenveen star produces pre-season assist to send transfer signal

Rangers target Joey Veerman set up Heerenveen’s goal in their friendly defeat against Dutch rivals FC Groningen.

The midfielder has been linked with the Light Blues for three months as the 22-year-old looks to move on.

Veerman has hit out at his club’s valuation of him which he fears is scaring potential suitors off.

But that didn’t stop him providing an assist for his club in their pre-season bounce match against fellow Eredivisie side Gronginen.

Veerman swung in a corner for Polish international striker Pawel Bochniewicz to head home.

The match was played in four half hours with Groningen running out 2-1 winners in the end.

Veerman’s inclusion suggests a move to Ibrox isn’t imminent but Steven Gerrard will be keen to strengthen his squad.

Despite winning the title for the first time in a decade last season, the Ibrox boss doesn’t want them to let their standards slip.

He said: “We want the hunger and the mentality of the players to remain as it was at the beginning of last season.

“We were very focused coming back during the lockdown and started the league very strong. We’re champions but it’s important we park that up and reset and go in with the same mentality and that’s full of hunger and ambition to make sure this season is a success as well.

“What we have to do is remember the things we did well. Defensive wise, our organisation and shape gave us the important foundation to go and win football matches from.

“It’s important we remember what we did well but you’re always looking to improve, tweak and change and strive to get better. We’ve added some new faces into the group.

“We’re still waiting on players who have been at different tournaments that played longer than last year to come in.

“We need stuff to fall into place over the next week to 10 days but come the Livingston game we’re looking forward to starting the season well.”

Rangers kick off their Scottish Premiership title defence against Livingston on July 31 and ahead of the new campaign we have an exclusive preview which you can get both in your inbox and through your letterbox. Head over here to find out more and secure your copy.
