Rangers supporters were treated to an all-action 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Saturday provided the 2,000 in attendance with a game to remember.
Steven Gerrard has never had the luxury of using pre-season for experimentation before with Europa League qualifiers already underway in each of his previous three seasons.
But it would remiss to think the Rangers boss isn't taking treating these friendlies with the upmost importance with Champions League qualification getting underway next month.
Gerrard has secured John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala but Nnamdi Oforoboh faces a wait after his ECG test produced a "red flag".
But the Ibrox manager's work is far from finished in terms of new personnel and formation tweaks tweaks as he alluded to after the clash with the Gunners.
Speaking to Rangers TV, he said: "I think once everyone's back and once we've got the squad set - we're still looking to maybe add something to it as well - so once we've got the right personnel in I have to have the variety because some teams, and some managers, will try and stop this system if they've seen it for some years now."
Gerrard spoke at length about how he'll look to find ways to get his star right-backs James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson into the same starting XI.
The 41-year-old's note that he is looking to "maybe add something to it" will get supporters excited and it will be for good reason if it turns out to be Joey Veerman.
The Dutch schemer is valued at around £7m and he looks poised to leave Heerenveen despite his proposed move to Hellas Veronas hitting the skids.
Gerrard is understood to be keen on the 22-year-old and his range of vision and passing probably reminds the Liverpool icon of some of his own best attributes.
A player like Veerman can play several positions in midfield - he has the passing ability of Steven Davis and the goal threat of Scott Arfield.
If Rangers are to adapt and evolve then someone of like the Heerenveen man has the skillset to thrive in multiple formations.
The Ibrox boss knows his team will be better when the likes of Borna Barisic and Alfredo Morelos return but a player of Veerman's burgeoning potential could also make a real difference.
