Joey Porter says Ben Roethlisberger apologized too late

It didn’t take long after Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to speak for the vultures to begin to circle. The latest is former Steeler player and assistant coach Joey Porter. NFL Total Access decided to have him on this week so he could share his opinion on what Roethlisberger did wrong in his apology to wide receiver Antonio Brown.

According to Porter, Roethlisberger waited too long to apologize to Brown and Big Ben mishandled it. But if he’d been paying attention, Porter would know Roethlisberger tried sooner to apologize to Brown once he realized Brown thought he took his critique too far. But if Brown spent several weeks leading Roethlisberger to believe things were ok, what else would Roethlisberger do?

But all that aside, it’s important to take anything Porter says with a grain of salt. He was let go by the Steelers this offseason once they admitted to themselves Porter was completely incapable of coaching up the outside linebackers. And we can’t forget the rumor that circulated Porter was pitting the defense against the offense before he lost his job.

Former players who come forward after the fact is always a dicey situation. Many of these guys have an ax to grind with the team or are simply looking for attention to promote themselves.
