Joey King Admits The Conjuring Franchise Is 'Too Scary'

Joey King American actress

The Conjuring star Joey King, known for her role as Christine in the original film, has revealed that she hasn't watched the rest of the franchise due to finding it 'too scary.' The Conjuring, released in 2013, was a critical and commercial success that launched an ongoing horror series.

The franchise currently includes two sequels centered around paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, with a fourth installment in the works. Additionally, there are two spin-off/prequel series, Annabelle and The Nun, which delve into the origins of their respective entities.

In an interview promoting her film We Were The Lucky Ones, King shared that her experience filming The Conjuring was intense and that she struggles to watch it due to its frightening nature. She admitted to still being haunted by the image of the Witch Bathsheba Sherman, refusing to even mention her name during the interview.

Despite her reluctance to revisit The Conjuring franchise, King has ventured back into the horror genre on occasion. Following her role in The Conjuring, she appeared in the found footage horror film Quarantine in 2008. In 2017, she took on a lead role in the supernatural horror movie Wish Upon, directed by John R. Leonetti, who had previously collaborated with her on The Conjuring.

King's foray into horror continued with her role in The Lie in 2018, a psychological horror film produced by Blumhouse. She also starred in Slender Man the same year, although the film received mixed reviews despite its moderate box office success.

While King has returned to horror projects over the years, none have matched the acclaim and popularity of The Conjuring. The original film, based on the real-life case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, follows the haunting of the Perron family in a Rhode Island farmhouse, setting the stage for the successful franchise.

For fans interested in revisiting the scares of The Conjuring, the film is currently available for streaming on Max in the US.
