LOS ANGELES _ General manager Tom Telesco said he didn't want to discuss contract matters Monday during a pre-training camp media session with local reporters.
Barely 24 hours later, the Chargers and defensive end Joey Bosa agreed on a contract extension. According to ESPN, it's a five-year, $135 million extension that includes $102 million in guarantees, the most in NFL history for a defensive player.
Bosa, who turned 25 this month, had one year remaining on his rookie contract, with a $14.36 million salary in 2020.
He was a candidate to potentially hold out, which was why Telesco was asked about Bosa's status Monday.
On Tuesday, Bosa was one of the final Chargers to report for coronavirus testing in advance of training camp opening. About two hours later, reports of his extension surfaced.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Bosa is coming off a season in which he started all 16 games and finished with 11.5 sacks.
He was a first-round pick _ No. 3 selection overall _ in 2016. In 51 career games, Bosa has 40 sacks and 201 combined tackles.
The extension pushed Bosa past Cleveland pass rusher Myles Garrett atop the NFL's defensive money list. Two weeks ago, Garrett signed a five-year, $125 million extension that includes $100 million in guarantees.
