Joey Barton lays down challenge to young players which could save Bristol Rovers money

Bristol Rovers boss Joey Barton's plan is to enter the transfer market up to nine more times before the window closes in September.

But the manager is more than happy for those plans to change dramatically, should the youngsters and academy graduates joining his squad for pre-season break into first-team contention.

Several players yet to make a senior league appearance for the Gas attended the pre-season training camp at Bisham Abbey last week and took part in Friday's 1-1 friendly draw at Melksham Town.

Luca Hoole, Sam Heal, Joe Budd, Ryan Jones, Kieran Phillips and Kinsly Murray were among the youngsters to get minutes at Oakfield Arena, and Barton has challenged them to follow the path of Zain Walker and Pablo Martinez.

The duo flourished early in the spring after Barton's arrival, emerging from the fringes to feature regularly late in the season. Their efforts in the face of relegation have earned them a place in the manager's plans for the upcoming League Two campaign.

And messrs Hoole, Heal and co have the same chance in the upcoming weeks as Barton refines his squad.

"We’re working on a few things and I’m hoping to move four (deals) on in the next week, and the more and more I go through it, we’re probably eight or nine players away from where we want to be," the manager told Bristol Live.

"But I’m hoping some of those younger players come and emerge make us think “we’re not going to take a player in that position, we think we’ve got someone we can grow”.

"This week has certainly given me a lot of confidence and there’s nothing better than developing one of your own. That’s where Pablo and Zain Walker last year were bright lights in dark moments because they developed from within the club and to see young Jed Ward, he’s our number one at the minute while Anssi’s (Jaakkola) away.

"We’ve got to be mindful of developing our own talent and I’ve spoken to the owner about this. I won’t just bring in a player because they’ve got more experience if I think there’s a young kid that could develop.

"That’s where we have to see these lads develop in pre-season and they’ve come back in great shape and given themselves an opportunity to show what they can do."

So far, Barton believes the youngsters have acquitted themselves well.

"The young boys have come back and given a really good account of themselves," he said.

"We want to have a look at these players in the first-team environment. The key for them will be if they can keep going with the intensity as the intensity of the fixtures goes up and we start to play better and better opposition.

"The challenge for them boys will be to stay in the first-team group and I think a few have given a really good account of themselves in the week we’ve had.

"I’ve been really happy with some of them, some have been a really nice surprise."
