Joey Barton latest as Fleetwood Town boss set for training return on Tuesday

Joey Barton is due to return to Fleetwood on Tuesday to take training after allegedly flooring Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel in a tunnel fracas.

But League One Town insist neither they nor boss Barton have been since contacted by police about the incident.

Barnsley manager Stendel was left bloodied on the ground and needing emergency dental treatment following a clash with Barton.

The two managers had a tense handshake pitchside after the final whistle following the Tykes' 4-2 win at Oakwell on Saturday.

Tempers then flared in the tunnel afterwards and the FA are investigating after receiving the referee's report.
EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey has also promised to help investigate the bust-up.

But Barton is hopeful of riding out the storm after Fleetwood's players had a pre-arranged day off on Monday.

Barton is now due to take training as usual on Tuesday and hopes to remain in charge with the support of owner Andy Pilley.

Barton is understood to be claiming he barged into the back of his German counterpart, who fell head first into the metal support inside the tunnel, damaging his two front teeth and leaving Stendel bloodied and shaken.

Police were later filmed briefly stopping a car taking Barton from Oakwell but no arrests were made after the League One game which ended the Cod Army's faint play-off hopes.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers received reports of an assault at Barnsley Football Club on Saturday, 13 April. This incident has been crimed and will be thoroughly investigated.”

The incident is the latest row to affect Barton who was sacked by Rangers in November 2016 and took over his first managerial job at Fleetwood in June, after serving 13 months of an 18-month ban from football for gambling breaches.
