Joey Barton issues response to allegations of assault on Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel

Joey Barton has denied allegations of assault on Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.

The Fleetwood boss was allegedly involved in a bust-up with the German after his side's 4-2 defeat with former Dundee United youngster Harry Souttar sent-off in the second half.

Barton was stopped from leaving the stadium by police after the incident which reportedly left Stendel needing emergency dental surgery.

And now the Rangers flop has issued a statement on the incident.

Taking to Twitter, he said: "With regards to the alleged incident on Saturday following our game against Barnsley, I emphatically deny all allegations made.

"Given this matter has not been formally closed, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comments."

South Yorkshire Police said: "Officers investigating an incident at Barnsley Football Club have arrested a man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and racially aggravated assault.

"The man attended a police station on Wednesday and was arrested. He remains in police custody for questioning. Inquiries into the incident are ongoing."
