Joey Barton investigated by police over alleged assault of Barnsley manager

Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton is being investigated after allegedly assaulting Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel.

Barton was involved in a tunnel brawl at Oakwell after his side were beaten 4-2 in a heated encounter which saw Harry Souttar sent off.

Reports suggest Barton and Stendel had to be separated by stewards and police in the tunnel.

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident with Barton stopped from leaving Oakwell at full-time.

The controversial former Man City and Newcastle player has Fleetwood sitting 11th in the League One table in his first managerial job.

Neither side fulfilled their post-match media duties after the final whistle at Oakwell.

Barnsley striker Cauley Woodrow alleges Barton "physically assaulted" Stendel and left him with "blood pouring from his face" before later deleting the tweet.

Tottenham star adds to injury crisis ahead of Man City clash

A Barnsley statement read: "The club can confirm there was an alleged incident in the tunnel area that took place following the conclusion of today’s match, which South Yorkshire police are currently investigating.

"The club is assisting the police with its enquiries and, as a result, we are not in a position to make any further comment at this time."

Footage emerged showing a Barnsley official trying to drive Barton out of Oakwell before being stopped by police.

Fleetwood declined to comment on the incident.

Barton was involved in a series of high-profile clashes during his playing career, which came to an end when he was banned for breaching FA betting rules.

The former midfielder was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to assault in 2008.

He was also handed a four-month suspended sentence following an assault on Manchester City teammate Ousmane Dabo.

During his time at QPR, he was given a 12-match ban by the FA following a sending off against Manchester City.

Barton was confirmed as Fleetwood's manager in April last year and took charge for the start of the 2018/19 season.

The League One side started the season well and were in the play-off mix but inconsistent form for much of the campaign has seen them remain in midtable.

Barnsley, who sit second in the table, raced into a two-goal lead at Oakwell before Ched Evans struck just after the hour mark.

Wes Burns again reduced the deficit after Cameron McGeehan struck before Jacob Brown secured a 4-2 win for the hosts.
