Police are reportedly investigating Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton over an alleged assault after his team's game at Barnsley.

Barton and Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel reportedly clashed as they walked down the tunnel following Barnsley’s 4-2 win at home to Fleetwood on Saturday.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed it is probing an assault and Sky Sports News reported 36-year-old Barton is under investigation.

A police statement to the Standard read: “Officers attended reports of an assault at Barnsley Football Club today: Saturday, April 13.

“We are investigating the circumstances around the incident.”

Sky Sports News also filmed police officers physically stopping Barton's car in an apparent attempt to stop him leaving the ground.

Barnsley, meanwhile, said in a statement: “The club can confirm there was an alleged incident in the tunnel area that took place following the conclusion of today’s match, which South Yorkshire Police are currently investigating.

“The club is assisting the police with its enquiries and, as a result, we are not in a position to make any further comment at this time.”

Barton has managed Fleetwood since summer last year.

As a player, he had a turbulent career playing for Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queen’s Park Rangers, Marseille, Rangers and Burnley. He played once for England.

In 2008, he was jailed for assault and affray in Liverpool city centre.
