Joey Barton facing potential police charges over alleged Daniel Stendel assault

Joey Barton could face police charges following his alleged assault on Barnsley manager Daniel Stendeal.

The Fleetwood Town boss has been the subject of an official complaint to the English Football League over an incident in the Oakwell tunnel last Saturday.

The FA are also believed to be monitoring the situation but are not expected to get involved due to an ongoing police investigation which could bring about formal charges, reports The Mirror .

Former Rangers flop Barton took training on Monday, three days after the bust-up which left Stendel with "blood pouring from his face" amid eyewitness claims that punches and a headbutt were thrown.

It is believed Stendel was pushed against a metal bar in the tunnel and his injuries meant he needed emergency dental treatment on Sunday to repair two teeth. Swelling and bruising to his face has gone down.

Fleetwood have indicated they are standing by Barton but if police charges follow that may put his position under further scrutiny.

Police have taken evidence from Stendel after interviewing him on Monday and are now gathering further details in their investigation.

Barnsley assistant Dale Tonge is taking the club’s pre-match press conference on Wednesday but Stendel will face the media after Good Friday’s game with Shrewsbury.
