Joey Barton 'facing cop probe' as former Rangers star accused of alleged assault on Barnsley manager

Joey Barton is facing a police probe over an alleged incident involving Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel, claims Sky Sports News.

Jeff Stelling made the allegation while on air following Fleetwood Town's 4-2 defeat to Barnsley.

According to the broadcaster, Barton was involved in a tunnel brawl at Oakwell after his side were beaten 4-2 in a heated encounter which saw Harry Souttar sent off.

Barnsley have released a statement which confirms South Yorkshire police are currently investigating 'an alleged incident in the tunnel area'.

A South Yorkshire police spokesman said: “We are aware of something that has taken place in the tunnel after the game and we are investigating.”

The statement reads: "The club can confirm there was an alleged incident in the tunnel area that took place following the conclusion of today’s match, which South Yorkshire police are currently investigating.

"The club is assisting the police with its enquiries and, as a result, we are not in a position to make any further comment at this time."

Meanwhile, in a now deleted Tweet, Barnsley player Cauley Woodrow claimed the Barnsley managed had 'blood pouring from his face' following the alleged incident.

It read: "To have a manager that can physically assault another manager in the tunnel is disgusting, causing our manager to have blood pouring from his face."

Footage as since emerged showing a Barnsley official trying to drive Barton out of Oakwell before being stopped by police.

Neither side fulfilled their post-match media duties after the final whistle at Oakwell.

Barton is in his first managerial role having been appointed Fleetwood Town boss in June 2018.

The former England midfielder played for Rangers just eight times after joining from Burnley at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, but had his contract terminated in November, just five months after signing for the Ibrox club.

Fleetwood Town have not yet commented following the allegation.
