Joey Barton "emphatically denies" assaulting Barnsley manager

Joey Barton has denied allegations that he assaulted Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel in a tunnel incident.

His team Fleetwood Town were controversially defeated at Barnsley last Saturday in their League One clash.

Following the game, Barnsley confirmed an incident took place in the tunnel amid claims Barton confronted Stendel.

But now, the Huyton-born former football player has declared his innocence on Twitter.

In a statement he wrote: "With regards to the alleged incident on Saturday following our game against Barnsley, I emphatically deny all the allegations made.

Barnsley announced on Tuesday that they had lodged formal complaints with both the English Football League and the Football Association over the alleged incident after the match, which ended in a 4-2 victory for the home team and saw Fleetwood have a player sent off after 65 minutes.
