Joey Barton charged with ABH as former Rangers midfielder prepares for court date over Barnsley incident

Former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with actual bodily harm after an incident at Barnsley in April.

The Fleetwood Town manager was stopped from leaving the stadium by police after the incident which allegedly left Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel with facial injuries.

Barton denied allegations of assault as police launched an investigation.

Now South Yorkshire Police have confirmed the 36-year-old has been charged for the incident during the League One clash, which Barnsley won 4-2.

The former England midfielder - who has an ill-fated spell at Rangers in 2016 - has been charged with assault and bailed to appear in court on Wednesday, October 9.

It was confirmed in April that a man had been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated offences, though Barton maintained his innocence.

"With regards to the alleged incident on Saturday following our game against Barnsley, I emphatically deny all the allegations made," Barton tweeted.

"Given this matter has not been formally closed, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment."
