Joel Tomkins urges Hull KR to keep cool heads as relegation scrap hots up

Joel Tomkins has urged his Hull KR team-mates to keep cool heads as the pressure heats up at the bottom of Super League.

With automatic relegation back for the team that finishes bottom this season, Rovers, Leeds and London are all tied on eight points ahead of Anfield’s Magic Weekend.

Tomkins’ side have a crunch clash with Salford while the Rhinos and Broncos face each other - and the former Wigan man wants the Robins to remain calm.

He said: “It’s not panic stations at the moment but obviously we are under pressure with the table.

“If we’re in this position with four games left in the season then it probably will be panic stations, but we’re hoping that we can have a good run.

“If we start panicking I don’t think that’s going to improve us - it’s being level headed that will do that.

“There’s still a lot of rugby to be played before the end of the season.

“Huddersfield last week was a bit of a tale of our season - I think in four games this year we’ve been up at half-time and then gone off the rails.

“We need to fix it up pretty quickly.

“If we could see out those games we’d be pretty comfortable, but we’ve not so we need to improve.

“It’s nothing too technical, we just need to keep hold of the ball better and gain some more field position - that’s as simple as it is.

“We’re not too far away from winning these games.

“Salford in the Challenge Cup was one of our best performances of the season, and if we turn up and play like that again we’re not a bad team.”

One Red Devils player that is relishing the clash with Hull KR and Tomkins is half-back Jackson Hastings.

He said: “Me and Joel always seem to have a run in - he’s the back rower on my side of the field.

“He’s a big body, a good leader for them who runs hard and tackles hard.

“He’s a very aggressive player and I like to compete as well.

“He gets stuck into me a fair bit which is good - it brings out the best in me.”
