Joel Pereira joins Hearts from Manchester United as Craig Levein swoops for goalkeeper

Craig Levein has snapped up Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira as Hearts' sixth summer signing.

The 23-year-old has agreed a season-long loan deal to provide competition to Bobby Zlamal and Colin Doyle.

Under-pressure Levein hinted at the weekend that a deal for another shotstopper was close.

Now he has moved to snap-up the Portuguese keeper who has sixteen Under 21 caps to his name.

Pereira began his youth career at Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax before joining Manchester United in 2012.

Loan spells at Rochdale and Portuguese outfit Belenenses followed before his United first-team debut in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford in January 2017.

The keeper made his Premier League debut under Jose Mourinho in a 2-0 triumph at home to Crystal Palace.

Last season saw two more loan spells at Vitoria Setubal in the Portugeuse top flight before joining Belgian side Kortrijk for the second half of the campaign.

Pereira, who stands 6ft 2in, could make his debut in Hearts' Betfred Cup 2nd Round tie against Motherwell on Friday night.

He follows the same loan road to Gorgie that saw United full-back Demi Mitchell benefit from two stints with the Tynecastle outfit.
