Joel Matip undergoes scan as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp faces fresh selection headache

Liverpool could be down to one fit recognised centre-back for their Champions League opener this week after Joel Matip underwent a scan on a leg injury.

Matip had the tests on Saturday as a precaution after complaining of discomfort in a muscle following the 2-2 Merseyside derby draw with Everton on Saturday.

While the results revealed no obvious problem, Liverpool will continue to assess the defender's fitness as they ramp up preparations for the clash with Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday.

And with Virgil van Dijk already facing a fight to play again this season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage at Goodison, should Matip be ruled out it would leave Joe Gomez as the only senior centre-back option for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Fabinho will be on standby to feature alongside Gomez having featured in the heart of Liverpool's defence on several previous occasions.

Liverpool are already without Alisson Becker and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the trip to Holland, while Thiago Alcantara is a major doubt having suffered a knee injury when the victim of a red-card challenge from Everton forward Richarlison on Saturday.

The Reds are also waiting on the availability of Naby Keita, who was absent at the weekend.
