Joel Matip on being with 'depressed' Lionel Messi as Liverpool celebrated Barcelona win

Liverpool defender Joel Matip has explained how he was forced to take a drug test along with Lionel Messi after the Reds' sensational victory over Barcelona in the Champions League last season.

Jurgen Klopp's side lost the first leg in Spain 3-0 but produced a stunning comeback to win 4-3 on aggregate at Anfield and progress to the final of the competition.

But as his teammates joyously celebrated their victory, Matip had no option but to miss out as he was selected to undergo a routine UEFA drug test.

Joining him was a clearly dejected Messi, and speaking to 11Freunde Matip gave his account of events.

"I didn't care about anything, singing with the fans made me float," he said. "And when I came into the small room, there was a pretty depressed guy- Lionel Messi.

"You know each other but only from the pitch, you don't sit around with it every day in a small room like at a coffee party.

"Everyone is celebrating and I'm sitting in a cubicle with Messi!"

After his test Matip was allowed to join the rest of team in the celebrations, and described it as one of the highlights of his career so far.

"After the game, we lined up arm in arm in front of the Kop together with the fans," he continued.

"We sung You'll Never Walk Alone. That was one of the most beautiful moments in my career, maybe on the same level as my debut for Schalke."

Matip went on to help his team keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 win against Tottenham in the final, giving the Reds their first trophy under their manager Klopp.

Since then they have gone on to win the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, and were on the verge of a first ever Premier League title before the season was suspended.
