Joel Matip injury hands Liverpool yet another defensive worry

Liverpool's defensive injury crisis continued during their game against Spurs with Joel Matip being substituted at half-time.

The Reds were already without Fabinho for the game, with the midfielder-turned-centre-back suffering what was described as a minor muscle injury.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out with long-term injuries, it left Matip as the only senior experienced centre-back that Jurgen Klopp could call upon.

Yet Matip was replaced by Nathaniel Phillips at half-time of the Reds' game against Tottenham, leaving the 23-year-old to play alongside captain Jordan Henderson in the centre of defence.

Matip, 29, has suffered from plenty of injury problems in recent times, and BT Sport pundit Steve McManaman was concerned that the substitution was down to another fitness issue.

He said: " It had to be an injury, you wouldn’t take off your main, only, really, central defender, unless it was an injury.

"Again, another worry for Liverpool, it didn’t look serious because he played 45 minutes but another defensive problem."

With Liverpool facing a quick turnaround before facing West Ham on Sunday, it remains to be seen whether Fabinho or Matip will be fit in time for the match.

That could leave Klopp having to field a makeshift back four for the game against a West Ham side that have surprised many this season.

If Matip is injured, it will further strengthen calls for the Reds to sign a new centre-back in January, something that the club's hierarchy has so far resisted.

Yet time is running out to do so if the club do change their stance on bringing in a defender, with the transfer window set to shut at 11pm on Monday evening.
