Joel Matip fumes as Aaron Ramsdale makes bizarre Liverpool intervention

Liverpool's hopes of making the Carabao Cup final remain in the balance after a disappointing night against Arsenal.

The Reds were unable to break down the 10-man Gunners as they were held to a dismal goalless draw in their first leg on Thursday.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side face a difficult task when they head to the Emirates for the return game next week.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Matip not impressed

Fair to say Joel Matip had an interesting evening.

As one of the few Liverpool players to approach their usual level, the centre-back became so bored at Arsenal's lack of adventure that he effectively became the Reds' extra man with his ability to bring the ball out of defence.

He even managed a shot, although the less said about that the better.

Matip, though, certainly had words for referee Michael Oliver after being caught heavily by Bukayo Saka on the leg, berating the official for several moments after the incident. You tell him, Joel.

Ramsdale and the ghost shot

Aaron Ramsdale has undoubtedly defied expectations with a series of impressive displays since moving to Arsenal last summer.

Indeed, anyone who witnessed him regularly at his former clubs perhaps wondered why the Gunners spent £30million on his services.

Ramsdale's subsequent penchant for an over-elaborate saves has not passed unnoticed among Premier League observers.

And there was something spectacularly surreal about his sprawling dive to save a 'shot' that never actually came from Liverpool during one first-half attack. Looked good for the cameras, though.

Alisson feels involved

It was a strange experience for Alisson Becker, making his first-ever appearance in the Carabao Cup.

And Liverpool's dominance of possession meant that, for the most part, he had precious little to do between the sticks.

Indeed, there was a moment during the second half when he was able to trot way outside his penalty area and take a throw-in to Matip.

That the nearest Arsenal player was a full 40 yards away spoke volumes.

Ice Ice Millie

It wasn't just the home supporters who were given a headache by the dreary events on the field on Thursday.

During the first half alone, several players hit the deck having been caught in the face during a hard-fought if instantly forgettable encounter.

Among those was James Milner, leading to the unusual sight of the tough as teak midfielder left prone of the turf for several moments.

It must have hurt, as after his second-half substitution he was holding an ice pack to the affected area while sat on the bench. Ouch.
