Joel Matip absence explained as Nat Phillips starts for Liverpool

Nat Phillips has been handed only a second Premier League start for Liverpool this afternoon.

The centre-back will line up alongside Fabinho in the heart of the Reds defence for the Premier League clash at Brighton and Hove Albio n.

The duo have been paired together by Jurgen Klopp with Joel Matip not included having started the previous two games this week. There is no suggestion of an injury for the defender.

Takumi Minamino is given a first Premier League start of the season with Sadio Mane rested to the bench.

The Japan international is joined in a strong forward line by Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner line up in what is expected to be a two-man central midfield, with Jordan Henderson back among the substitutes having missed the last two games with a hamstring problem.

Andy Robertson returns at left-back, while Neco Williams continues at right-back to make his first top-flight start of the campaign. Alisson Becker is between the sticks.

LIVERPOOL (4-2-3-1): Alisson; N Williams, Phillips, Fabinho, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Milner; Salah, Minamino, Jota; Firmino.

Subs: Adrian, Mane, Henderson, Jones, Tsimikas, Origi, R Williams.
