Joel Lynch and Charlie Wyke injury update with Sunderland duo set to undergo scans

Joel Lynch has been given the all-clear after being knocked unconscious in Sunderland's weekend defeat at Portsmouth - but will undergo a scan on a rib injury he suffered at Fratton Park.

And striker Charlie Wyke is also set for a scan this week after he was substituted at half-time against Pompey due to a shoulder injury.

Black Cats centre-back Lynch was out for the count after colliding with goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin near the end of the game but, after lengthy treatment on the pitch, he had come back round before he was stretchered off and taken by ambulance to hospital for a check-up.

Tests showed that Lynch's head injury was not as serious as was first feared and he was released on Saturday night.

He will now be monitored this week as he goes through the FA's concussion protocol which will see him eased back into training, but which - assuming there are no setbacks - could mean the head injury will not rule him out of this weekend's game against promotion rivals Ipswich Town.

But Lynch also took a heavy blow to the ribs in the same collision and that is a bigger concern at present, with a scan necessary to check for any broken bones.

If Lynch is not passed fit to play against the Tractor Boys, Tom Flanagan is the most likely replacement.

Wyke damaged his shoulder in a collision with Pompey goalkeeper Alex Bass, but continued until the break when he was replaced by January signing Kyle Lafferty.

The scan will help Sunderland's medical team discover the extent of the problem and determine how long he could be out.

Northern Ireland man Lafferty is likely to start if Wyke is not fit to play against Ipswich, although Will Grigg remains another option.
