Joel Glazer's summer U-turn meant Jose Mourinho was right over Man Utd favourite

Joel Glazer has finally admitted defeat when it comes to the sale of Anthony Martial.

The Manchester United owner is immensely fond of the Frenchman, who could leave Old Trafford in January after more than six years.

United shelled out big money to sign Martial as a teenager during Louis van Gaal's tenure back in 2015.

However, after scoring on his debut and enjoying a good first year, the Frenchman has continued to deceive with his career hampered by inconsistent performances.

Such displays meant that Jose Mourinho wanted to offload Martial, but twice saw his efforts blocked.

The Evening Standard reported that Glazer stopped the Special One selling the forward.

Now though it appears as if the American will finally admit defeat and allow Martial to seek pastures new.

Back in the summer Martial was on the market as former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided it was best for the club to recoup any money and reinvest it elsewhere, according to the Athletic.

The 26-year-old has scored just once this season and struggled for game time in an immensely competitive forward line.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho arrived to add further competition with the likes of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford also pushing for starts.

Martial's agent has been vocal in expressing the player's desire to leave with Sevilla currently looking like a possible destination.

Philippe Lamboley told Sky Sports News : "Anthony wishes to leave the club in January. He just needs to play. He doesn't want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon."

Rangnick has said that he will seek clarification from the player rather than dealing with his representative via the media.

He said: "I don't communicate with agents via the media or the press."

"The player hasn't spoken with me or with us about it... To be honest, what his agent has said in the media is not that much of interest.

"It should be the player. If a player wishes to go to another club, it should be the player who informs either the board or myself, whoever. I have never spoken to a player via media or agents."

Martial is one of several players who could quit United in the New Year, or perhaps the summer.

Rangnick is clear that he wants players representing the Red Devils who have a desire to be there.

He added: "I wouldn't say he's not worth keeping but, of course, players have to want to play and stay for a club and a big club like Manchester United."
