Joe Willock wins Premier League player of the month award after Newcastle goalscoring spree

Newcastle United loanee Joe Willock has been named the Premier League's EA Sports player of the month for May.

It caps a remarkable month for the 21-year-old Arsenal midfielder after his goalscoring run helped shoot the Magpies to Premier League safety.

He notched eight times after joining Newcastle on loan from the Gunners in January, including a run of seven goals in the his final seven appearances, equalling Alan Shearer's record for consecutive goals for the club.

May saw Willock score in wins over Leicester City, Sheffield United and Fulham, while he was also on target in the 4-3 defeat to Manchester City.

He becomes the first Newcastle player to win the award since goalkeeper Tim Krul way back in November 2013.

Willock became a popular figure among the United fans, not only for his goalscoring feats, but for the way he embraced the region during his loan spell.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to keep him at the Emirates next season, but Newcastle head coach has underlined his ambition to bring him back to St James' Park next term.

The Gunners are likely to want in excess of £20m for his services - although that figure may have increased after his impressive form.

Bruce himself was named manager of the month for April after United's recovery from a perilous league position.
