Joe Willock reveals he was 'banging down Steve Bruce's door' ahead of Leicester showing

Joe Willock has reflected on Newcastle United's "brilliant" performance at Leicester City.

The on loan Arsenal star notched his fifth goal for the club in the 4-2 win against the Foxes which put the Magpies on the brink of Premier League safety.

On a night when they roared into a 4-0 lead, a late defensive lapse almost cost them dear as Leicester fought back and applied late pressure.

But Newcastle sit in 13th place going into the weekend.

Willock said after the game: "We knew we had to get something out of today's game.

"To come here and do it so convincingly is brilliant.

"I've come off the bench a few times and scored.

"So I was knocking on the door and I told the manager I needed to start and he believed in me and put me in and hopefully I repaid him."

And looking back on beating a quality team like Leicester, Willock said: "They are a top side, fighting for the Champions League.

"We had to defend well and knew we had more than enough pace on the counter to get the goals like we did today.

"That was not how we wanted to finish.

"We wanted to stay on top."

Reflecting on the week of preparations in the build-up to the game, Willock said: "All week we have been trying to stay compact and when we get behind them be ruthless.

"I am happy Callum [Wilson] is back on the scoresheet and that will give him confidence."
