Joe Willock on bench for Arsenal at Rangers despite Newcastle United loan enquiry

Newcastle United's main summer target Joe Willock was back in Arsenal colours today after being named on the bench for the Gunners' pre-season clash against Rangers.

Mikel Arteta's side have been on tour in Scotland and after losing 2-1 to Hibernian this week they now face a stiffer test against the Scottish Premiership winners from last season.

Willock has been subject to a loan enquiry from the Magpies with the club seemingly unable to afford the fee to buy him permanently.

With the club's takeover situation in limbo, a low budget is on offer to Steve Bruce this summer.

When asked about Willock's immediate future, Arteta said this week: "Well, he wasn't involved today because he had a little groin issue.

"He trained yesterday really well but we didn't want to risk him.

"Joe is part of our plans, he's our player and in the time that he is here we will try to make the most out of him.

"He had a great experience on loan.

"He was, I think one of the most important players for their survival."
