CLEVELAND _ The spectacular consecutive snap streak of 10-time Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas ended and coach Hue Jackson benched rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer again in an eventful Browns game.
The only predictable thing that happened was the Browns lost, falling 12-9 to the Tennessee Titans in overtime Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Browns are now 0-7 for the third time since 1999 and the second season in a row.
Ryan Succop made the game-winning, 47-yard field goal with 1:55 left in OT to lift the Titans to 4-3.
The Browns got the ball to begin overtime but went three-and-out. Wide receiver Kenny Britt failed to haul in a catchable pass from quarterback Cody Kessler for a would-be first down on second-and-10, and Kessler threw the ball away a play later.
The Titans took over at their 36 after the Browns punted. They advanced to the Browns 44, and on third-and-6, cornerback Mike Jordan broke up a pass from quarterback Marcus Mariota to receiver Eric Decker, forcing the Titans to punt.
The Browns, though, went three-and-out again, with Kessler being sacked for a loss of 12 on third-and-8.
The Titans got the ball back at the Browns 49 after a punt. They moved 20 yards in six plays to set up Succop's deciding field goal.
Thomas' streak ended at 10,363 snaps when he suffered a left triceps injury with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter. The Browns believe it's the longest streak in NFL history.
Spencer Drango replaced Thomas, the third overall pick in the 2007 draft.
Thomas jogged to the locker room with medical personnel with 4:25 left in the third quarter. Shortly thereafter, the Browns announced Thomas, 32, would not return to the game.
Jackson benched Kizer again after he threw interceptions late in the first half and early in the second half Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Kessler was summoned to replace Kizer.
Jackson sat Kizer at halftime of the team's Week 5 loss to the New York Jets and kept him on the sideline last week against the Houston Texans because of the second-round draft pick's struggles, particularly with turnovers.
Kizer's biggest problem reared its ugly head when Titans safety Kevin Byard picked him off with 19 seconds left in the second quarter and with 13:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Kizer finished 12-of-20 passing for 114 yards with two interceptions and a rating of 36.2.
On Kessler's first drive, the Browns marched 70 yards in nine plays to set up rookie kicker Zane Gonzalez's 47-yard field goal that tied the score 6-6 with 4:25 left in the third quarter.
Succop capped a nine-play, 47-yard drive with a 46-yard field goal to give the Titans a 9-6 advantage with 14:50 left in the fourth quarter. He then missed a 53-yard field goal wide left with 8:44 to play, giving the Browns hope.
But with 5:53 left, Byard intercepted Kessler, too, when he overthrew a deep pass intended for rookie tight end David Njoku.
The Browns defense then got a stop and the ball back with 4:17 remaining. They marched 31 yards in nine plays to set up Gonzalez's successful 54-yard field goal that tied the score at 9 with 47 seconds left.
Kizer played pretty well for most of the first half until his biggest issue with turnovers crept up again.
Kizer entered the weekend with an NFL-high nine interceptions, and he threw his 10th one late in the second quarter with the Browns threatening to score. The turnover allowed the Titans to maintain their 6-3 lead at halftime.
Kizer went 12-of-19 passing for 114 yards with the interception for a rating of 57.8 against in the first half against the Titans.
Jackson made a puzzling decision during the game's opening series. After Titans Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan was flagged for grabbing the face mask of rookie defensive end Myles Garrett on third-and-1 at the Browns 32, Jackson declined the penalty that would have made it third-and-16. Then the Titans lined up to go for it on fourth-and-1, and defensive tackle Danny Shelton jumped offside to give them an easy first down.
Four plays later, Succop made a 43-yard field goal to cap the 11-play, 45-yard drive and give the Titans a 3-0 lead with 8:38 left in the first quarter.
The Browns later marched from their 6 to the Titans 42, but a holding penalty on tight end Seth DeValve and an illegal use of hands to the face call on running back Isaiah Crowell on consecutive snaps doomed the drive.
The Titans took control at their 24 after a punt, and on third-and-6 from their 28, tight end Delanie Walker caught a 12-yard pass from Mariota. Jackson challenged the play, and after a replay review, it was ruled that Walker fumbled and safety Ibraheim Campbell recovered.
The Browns turned the takeaway into Gonzalez's 31-yard field goal at the end of their 7-play, 27-yard drive and tied the score at 3 with 8:31 left in the second quarter. They settled for the kick after Kizer's third-down pass intended for rookie tight end David Njoku in the end zone sailed high and wide.
The Titans countered by driving to the Browns 5 and taking a 6-3 lead when Succop made a 23-yard field goal to cap a 14-play, 70-yard drive with 1:37 left in the second quarter. The Browns held the Titans out of the end zone despite committing two penalties that resulted in first downs during the drive _ rookie defensive tackle Caleb Brantley jumped offside and Garrett had a neutral-zone infraction.
The Browns wasted a golden opportunity to tie the score or take the lead heading into halftime. They moved the ball to the Titans 28, where on first-and-10, Kizer's pass intended for receiver Rashard Higgins sailed high and into the hands of Byard at the 7 with 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The Browns committed 12 penalties for 81 yards. The Titans had five penalties for 35 yards.
