Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins started Sunday’s 19-16 win over the Detroit Lions — his first win as an NFL quarterback — but he wasn’t the one to take the final snap.
This wasn’t by design. Nope. The Redskins simply didn’t know where the rookie quarterback was.
The Fox broadcast would show that Haskins was already celebrating and taking selfies with the few Washington fans who showed up to FedExField after Fabian Moreau’s interception, forcing Case Keenum to take the game-ending kneeldown. While interim coach Bill Callahan wasn’t too upset with the 22-year-old’s excitement, one former Redskins quarterback was furious after the win.
As Haskins was taking selfies with fans, former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann tweeted strongly worded criticism for Haskins.
Haskins probably should have been on the field to take that final snap, but it was such a non-issue for Theismann to feel the need to condemn as “unprofessional” and “wrong.”
The Redskins made a game-sealing interception that left two seconds on the clock. And as Callahan explained, Haskins likely didn’t realize that there was time left in the game amid his excitement.
He said after the game:
“I think he thought the game was over. I’m happy we won. We’ll address that.”
Haskins would add after the game that he thought the game was over.
