Joe Theismann doesn’t mind idea of Dwayne Haskins wearing No. 7

The Washington Redskins might have a new No. 7 under center.

Lost in the chaos of the Redskins landing Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins at No. 15 was the fact his preferred number — No. 7 — is off limits in Washington.

Joe Theismann was the last one to wear it, of course. But Theismann appeared on Redskins Talk and said this on the subject, according to NBC Sports Washington’s Michelle Martinelli:

“I’m not opposed to it. I’m not saying yes yet, but I really want to sit down and talk to the young man and get a chance to meet him. I know he’s reached out and said he wants to ask me, so as early as I can get back into town and be able to set up an opportunity when he gets into town to be able to sit down and talk to him about it.”

This sure goes right in line with his congratulatory tweet to Haskins during the draft:

Theismann says he wants to get to know Haskins first and cares more about the person than any number.

But that number is historic in Redskins territory, as he wore it for 12 years and won a Super Bowl while doing so.

If Haskins is lucky enough to inherit the number, he’ll be doing so with quite the blessing from Theismann.
