Joe Staley returns to practice for 49ers

The 49ers’ first practice report leading up to their Week 8 showdown with the Panthers came with a bit of good news. Joe Staley was back in action after missing the last five weeks with a broken fibula he suffered in Week 2 against the Bengals.

There’s some optimism that Staley could return to the lineup against the Panthers in Week 8. The fact he’s practicing at all is a good indicator that he’s on track to play, but it’ll be worth monitoring throughout the week.

Defensive tackle DJ Jones and wide receiver Deebo Samuel were also back in practice Wednesday. Jones is working through a hamstring injury while Samuel deals with a groin ailment. Both players missed Week 7 in Washington.

Here is the full practice report from the first practice of Week 8:

Did not participate

FB Kyle Juszczyk (knee)
CB Ahkello Witherspoon (foot)
OT Mike McGlinchey (knee)

Limited participation

OT Joe Staley (fibula)
WR Deebo Samuel (groin)

TE George Kittle (groin)
DE Dee Ford (quad)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
